NSI Research and Symposia
Local field studies and workshops are foundational to planning and evaluating the impact of NSI’s work. From the start, NSI has been conducting original research on rural health care workers in Nepal, seeking hard data about the situation on the ground. Completed studies are summarized here with links.
Focused Assessment:
Summer 2007
In a joint project with the National Health Training Centre (NHTC), NSI conducted an extensive clinical skills assessment of 163 mid-level non-midwifery workers in 4 rural districts of the country.
Field Study:
Summer 2006
NSI study team conducted on-site assessment of health care workers in 23 district hospitals in Nepal in order to determine actual staffing patterns for different levels of worker.
Field Study:
Summer 2006
Through questionnaires and personal interviews, the NSI study team determined the location and practice type of all 99 General Practice (Family Medicine) doctors trained in Nepal .
Focused Assessment:
March - June 2006
In a joint project with the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), NSI conducted a focused assessment of 9 mid-level health care training institutions working under CTEVT.
Conference:
March 2006
A symposium of national and international experts discussed the family practice (GP) doctor situation in Nepal and developed strategies for strengthening this cadre.
Public Health School Project:
October 2005
MPH students at Harvard School of Public Health conducted a consultation (including literature review) that informed NSI in developing its original concept document.
Literature Review:
January 2005
NSI Task force assembled this annotated bibliography of international references pertaining to the issue of retaining health care workers in remote locations.
