| Rural Staff Support |
Training is not enough. Left to "natural forces", young health care workers beat a relentless path into the cities or out of the country. In order to remain – and to function at a high level – in a remote location, staff need certain basic supports. Through the experience of its network hospitals, and by the international medical literature, NSI has identified several features that constitute an environment that "enables" health care.
These constitute the "5 C's" of a rural staff support program. NSI is preparing to pilot this package of support at several government hospitals in remote districts of Nepal.

Connection with a larger hospital
NSI partner hospitals are providing a vital link to hospitals lying in more remote areas of Nepal. This includes training of the remote hospital's staff, on-going mentoring, and strengthening of a connection for referring patients.
Communication
NSI is equipping rural hospitals with satellite-based internet service – a new facility for these hospitals. This will connect the international “Swinfen Charitable Trust”[Link] telemedicine program with those locations, as well as allowing routine communication with other locations in Nepal.
Continuing Medical Education
NSI is working with CMC Vellore[Link] (an excellent medical college in south India) and with World CME to tailor a CME package for rural health care workers in Nepal.
Children's Education
NSI is working with boarding schools in Kathmandu to create an improved package for the schooling of the children of health care workers.
Community Governance
Although Nepal's Health Ministry has set a high priority on decentralizing the governance of its health institutions, up until this time few hospitals have come under local control. NSI is working with local community groups to assume responsibility for their hospitals.
